Incorporating Wood Furniture into Modern Interior Design

Incorporating wooden elements into interior design remains a timeless choice. Wood offers a warm and organic contrast to the sleek lines and contemporary materials prevalent in modern design. This article delves into the art of seamlessly integrating wooden furniture into your living space.

Types of Wood for Custom Furniture

Hardwood vs. Softwood

When contemplating wood for custom-made furniture, it is essential to understand the difference between hardwood and softwood. Hardwood, such as oak, can be expensive but is also very durable. Softwood options like pine or cedar offer a more budget-friendly alternative, but won't yield high-quality furniture.

At Home Made Home, we take pride in the quality and longevity of our furniture. Our primary wood of choice is Victorian Ash, an exquisite hardwood. At times we also offer Tasmanian Oak, but it may not always be available. To ensure affordability without compromising on quality, we employ materials like particle boards for the structural components of our furniture, which remain concealed in the final product. The visible surfaces, on the other hand, are exclusively crafted from hardwood. Opting for particle boards in structural elements not only ensures affordability but also reduces the weight of our furniture. Of course, customers can always choose to have the structural components of their furniture made from hardwood.

Finishes and Colours

At Home Made Home, we use oil-based varnish, Scandinavian oil and Osmo hard wax, to finish all our furniture. Both varnishes impart a beautiful, clear finish that accentuates the unique texture of the timber. An advantage of using oil-based varnish over water-based alternatives is its non-sticky nature. If you prefer a different colour over the natural hue of the hardwood, staining the surface is an option we offer.

Incorporating Wooden Furniture into Your Space

Creating Focal Points

Wooden furniture pieces, such as dining or coffee tables, have the ability to serve as captivating focal points within your home. These pieces not only provide functionality but also contribute to the aesthetics of your interior.

Customised Wooden Furniture

For a truly distinctive interior, contemplate the option of custom-made wooden furniture. We can craft pieces for you that seamlessly fit into your space and mirror your personal style.

Combining Wood with Other Materials

To strike the perfect balance, consider blending wood with materials like glass, metal, or stone. This interplay gives rise to a contemporary aesthetic infused with a touch of warmth. This approach can for example be applied to the creation of centrepieces for dining tables.

Wood and Lighting: The Perfect Duo

Illuminating Wooden Surfaces

Consider the art of illuminating wooden surfaces, including shelves or panels, with LED strip lights. This approach creates a captivating interplay of light and shadow, adding depth into your design.

Ambient Lighting and Mood

The fusion of wood and lighting has the power to define the mood of your interior. Experiment with various lighting schemes to conjure the desired atmosphere, whether it's a cozy and intimate ambiance or a vibrant and lively setting.

Wood, with its timeless charm and versatility, enriches living spaces by harmonising aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. Whether it's the elegance of custom furniture, the practicality of shelves and cabinets, or the interplay of timber and light, the possibilities are endless. By making informed choices regarding the type of wood, finishes, and sustainability, you can create unique spaces that reflect your personality.
